Prior to joining Legacy of the Antipodes, Thomas, one of our two master craftsmen. worked at a boutique metal fabricating business in Auckland, New Zealand. There, in one of his many memorable projects, he collaborated with another artisan to design and manufacture a custom forged steel handrail and balustrade that was inspired by vines growing in nature!
The results are so spectacular – and something you will rarely see – that we wanted to showcase it to our clients. Taking two people more than one month to complete using a power hammer, the custom-made steel handrail boasts many noteworthy features and details.
For instance, the newel posts, and top and bottom rails are hollow sections of steel that twist to gradually taper down and wrap around straight round bars that form the balusters. You can also check out the tiny mushrooms forged on top of the screw caps to conceal the screws.
With its fairy tale-like whimsical charm, this steel handrail was commissioned by a client with a contemporary home with very clean lines and a light-coloured design palette. The contrast, as you can plainly see, is phenomenal.
